Mike Valasek – graduating in August 2009

Why did you choose the program?
This program looked best to me because it offered one Saturday class per month with online learning that wouldn’t take up too much of my time. I thought it would be very feasible to get through in two years.
How do you like the schedule?
I really like the schedule. I have a young family at home and am involved in after-school activities like coaching; so one Saturday per month is very feasible.
How is the clinical experience?
Doing the competencies and the job shadowing with my principal at my school has been the most beneficial. Being in school every day as a teacher is definitely not the same as being behind the scenes and seeing what a principal does on a daily basis and seeing how the school really functions from the inside.
What are your plans for using this degree?
I plan on going after a position as a principal, assistant principal, or perhaps athletic director.

Emily Sickler – graduating in August 2009

Why did you choose this program?
In my undergraduate program I had a cohort so I worked the two years with the same group of students, and that really helps my learning process. The fact that this is once per month is helpful for the drive. The cohort is really a plus for me.
How do you like the schedule?
It’s conducive to my life to be able to work full time and get through this program in two years.
How is the instruction?
The instructors are all very knowledgeable – they challenge us to stretch our thinking and inspire a desire to improve the educational system (however difficult that might be).
What are your plans for using the degree?
When I started the program I thought I would get the degree and keep teaching, but as we’re ending I think that principalship seems very realistic.
